I have been watching tennis for as long as I can remember, definitely since the late 80s when it was all about Becker and Edberg, and then into the 90s and that wonderful Agassi and Sampras rivalry. I don't remember how or why I started watching it, but it's something that's never left me and I don't think it ever will. I do play, only for fun, and I'm a member of my local tennis club.
It was the Olympics in 2000 when I fell in love with a Spanish boy by the name of Juan Carlos Ferrero, and then a few years later, with another Spanish boy called David Ferrer. I was lucky enough to see them both play (and play each other) a couple of times. They continued to be my favourites until theybroke my heartretired.
And lets be honest, they still are and in fact one of the reasons I started to watch Carlos Alcaraz play is that Juanki is his coach. Sometimes, it's very strange watching Alcaraz play - it's just like watching a young Juanki, the way he moves, the way he strikes the ball, even down to the way he spirals a little when things don't go the way he's expecting, and even the racket smashes.
I loved the Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray era - what they did for the game was incredible. I'm still reeling from Federer, Nadal and Murray retiring, but love that Murray is now back as Djokovic's coach. I also love that there are players coming through now who can actually beat Djokovic.
When it comes to the online fandom side of things, I'm still going through my origin story - it's not finished yet. I've only been here since just before Christmas. My son asked me if I was in fandom online... and then had to explain what that meant. He showed me how to use Tumblr where I found a lovely community of fans from all around the world - even people who are still loving Juanki and Ferru which is incredible.
I learned about fanfiction, and shipping, and oh, there are other people that have these thoughts?!. I've joined A03, I've joined a Discord server, heard people talking about Dreamwidth and
snowflake_challenge and here I am!
